Monday morning, I woke up with a renewed sense of purpose. Like Rex had said, a dinner with the family didn’t change much. Though it did give me clarity on what I wanted to do with my life. For one, I couldn’t keep hiding from the girl I liked. I couldn’t let her have that much power over me. I was in control here.

First period was going to be the toughest. But once I got used to being around Aurora again, I was sure I could focus on school and our plan to get information from Angelo. I shouldered the door open to the Salvatore building and made my way to Chem class.

The rush of adrenaline hit me like a wayward basketball straight in the chest. Aurora was still Aurora, with her long hair, those big eyes, and that innocent look about her that made me want to show her all the things her life was missing. I took in a breath and quickly rushed past her table.

Santino and Donata didn’t even look surprised when they saw me, which told me Rex had already talked with them. I was grateful for that. I didn’t need a million questions this morning.

Mr. Taylor started his lesson on time, and that gave me the opportunity to regroup and get my emotions in check. Though as much as I tried to keep my attention on the whiteboard, my gaze kept shifting over to Aurora’s blonde head. Sometime during class, she had put her hair up in a messy bun. I stared at the nape of her neck and thought of our brief encounter at Tiffany’s over the summer.

That day, she’d let me put a necklace on her. The same charge in the air that crackled the moment my fingers brushed her skin filled the air now. As if she could feel it too, she glanced over her shoulder. I didn’t bother to look away. I didn’t want to.

Our gazes locked. She didn’t turn away until the teacher called on her. Then she had to scramble to find the answer in her book. Like me, she hadn’t been paying attention to the lesson.

Maybe one class was all I could handle with her today. As soon as the bell rang, I made a bee line for the door. I rushed through the crowded hallways and didn’t stop until I reached the courtyard behind the bell tower.

While I was gone, Molly had been in charge of feeding Fluffy during the day. I came to see him every day before and after football practice. Molly used that time to give me a full report on how he was doing. Multiple times, she mentioned she’d seen Aurora in here, playing with the cat.

“You came back.”

I slow-blinked and turned to face Aurora. She should not have followed me here. What did she think was going to happen?

“I tried calling.”

“I know.”

Seeing her name on the screen had made the days bearable.

“Enzo—”

“I didn’t come back for you,” I lied.

Whatever she wanted to say to me, I didn’t need to know.
